Mastering Public Speaking: A Guide for Leaders

Public speaking can be daunting, especially in the fast-paced, technical world of Information Technology. Yet, as an leader, the ability to communicate effectively and engage an audience is crucial. Whether you’re presenting at a conference, leading a team meeting, or facilitating a workshop, incorporating open, honest, engaged, and humorous elements into your speaking style can make a significant impact.

Be Open and Transparent

1. Share Personal Stories: Begin with a personal anecdote or experience related to your topic. This not only humanizes you but also establishes a connection with your audience. Sharing your journey, including the ups and downs, makes your message more relatable and credible.

2. Encourage Questions: Foster an environment of openness by inviting questions throughout your presentation. This interactive approach not only keeps the audience engaged but also demonstrates your willingness to listen and address concerns.

Embrace Honesty

1. Acknowledge Challenges: Honesty about challenges and failures can be very powerful. It shows your audience that you’re realistic and trustworthy. When discussing complex projects or initiatives, acknowledging the potential pitfalls and how they were or can be overcome adds depth to your narrative.

2. Provide Clear Data: Back up your statements with clear, accurate data. Whether you’re discussing performance metrics, project timelines, or technical specifications, being transparent with data builds trust and reinforces your message.

Engage Your Audience

1. Interactive Elements: Use polls, Q&A sessions, and live demonstrations to keep your audience actively involved. This makes your presentation more dynamic and helps to maintain interest.

2. Visual Aids: Incorporate engaging visuals such as infographics, charts, and videos to illustrate your points. Visual aids not only enhance understanding but also break the monotony of a purely verbal presentation.

Infuse Humor

1. Light-Hearted Jokes: Appropriate humor can lighten the mood and make your presentation more enjoyable. A well-placed joke or humorous observation can help to relax your audience and make you more approachable.

2. Funny Stories: Share humorous anecdotes related to your topic. This can be particularly effective in illustrating common challenges or misconceptions in the field. Just ensure that your humor is relevant and respectful.

The Power of Storytelling in Leadership

by IPowerIdeas July 5, 2024

The Power of Storytelling in  Leadership

In the fast-paced, data-driven world , effective communication is paramount. Among the myriad communication techniques available, storytelling stands out as a powerful tool that can significantly impact a leader’s ability to inspire, motivate, and drive change within an organization.

The Impact of Storytelling

1. Engaging and Inspiring Teams: Storytelling helps to humanize complex technical concepts, making them more relatable and easier to understand. By weaving data and facts into a compelling narrative, leaders can capture the attention of their audience and inspire action. Stories resonate on an emotional level, fostering a sense of purpose and alignment among team members.

By painting a vivid picture of the future and illustrating the benefits of new technologies or processes, leaders can overcome resistance and garner support for innovation. A well-told story can create a sense of urgency and a shared vision, driving collective effort towards common goals.

Benefits of Storytelling

  • Improved Team Cohesion: By connecting on an emotional level, stories foster a sense of unity and shared purpose among team members.
  • Increased Influence: Storytelling enhances an leader’s ability to persuade and influence, essential for driving initiatives and securing buy-in from stakeholders.
  • Better Problem-Solving: Stories that highlight past experiences and solutions can serve as valuable reference points, aiding in problem-solving and decision-making.

Five Attributes of Highly Successful and Happy People

by IPowerIdeas April 5, 2024

These Are the Five Attributes of Highly Successful and Happy People

If you’d like to be happier or more successful this year, then ask yourself if you’re truly exuding these five attributes. The happiest and most successful people I know execute on these game-changers exceptionally well.

Key Takeaways

  • Practice exuding vision, compassion, passion, accountability and courage, and your life is bound to improve.
  • If you haven’t been doing one or more of these things and start now, you’ll be shocked at how quickly others around will notice and appreciate the changes — for both your personal and professional relationships.

During my 21 years in corporate America, I spent thousands of hours observing others.  Now, as a coach and consultant, I often get asked what attributes I value most in people — and these five stand out.  If you’re looking to achieve new levels of happiness of success this year, consider how well you embody the following five attributes. Not only do they drive success in leadership, but they drive success in life.

  1. Vision

Humans have a gift that no other living organism has: the power of imagination.  Successful, happy people use this gift.  They imagine a compelling and different future than the present, and they believe in their ability to create and shape it.  They don’t reactively accept the status quo or things they don’t like. Instead, they work hard to improve the world around them.

They recognize that they have agency and can proactively alter their surroundings and environment.  They never say things like: “That’s just the way it is” or “We’ve always done it that way.”  Instead, they imagine their desired or ideal state and then compare that vision to their actual state.  If they identify a gap, they immediately begin devising possible solutions that will close that gap.  Then, they get to work in employing and experimenting with those.  People like this show us that anything is possible, and they’re fun to be around because they tend to inspire us to do the same.

  1. Passion

We all have unique gifts and talents that excite us tremendously.  Time flies when we use them.  We tend to be better at them than our counterparts.  They come more naturally and easily to us than others.  Thus, we’re able to hone and improve our skills at a rate faster than our peers.  Doing these things feels more like play than work, and we can hardly believe that someone pays us to do them.

Life is too short not to invest in yourself.  We’re most successful and happy when we identify what unique gifts and talents we have, and take the time to practice them.  Not only does this help us feel fulfillment and joy, it allows us to best serve society.  Many individuals experience burnout, anxiety and depression because they spend 40 hours or more a week not doing what they love.  When we engage in activities that energize us (instead of things that drain us of energy), we’re not only happier, but we’re healthier.

I’ve had a few jobs I didn’t like and my life suffered while I had them.  I felt drained of energy when I arrived home.  I struggled to find the motivation to exercise and pursue personal hobbies.  I gained weight and lost touch with friends.  When I got back to a job I loved, all this changed.  I became a marathon runner, reconnected with friends and pursued personal hobbies like photography, scrapbooking and writing. Focusing on what we’re passionate about is incredibly important.

  1. Courage

Fear is a powerful motivator.  Research shows that our brains all have a subconscious component that works to protect us and keep us safe.  Many of us hold back and live life with the brakes on because we’re afraid of change and trying new things.  We have a fear of being uncomfortable, making mistakes, failing or facing judgment from others.  Courage sets us free.

As Franklin Roosevelt said, “Courage is not an absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.”  Courage allows us to speak our minds in the board room, express our true opinions, suggest unconventional courses of action and go against the status quo.  This is what allows us to progress, develop and innovate.

It can be scary to speak up.  But, it’s important.  The right people will value your bravery; not squash it.  Having the courage to be vulnerable, authentic and transparent gives other people permission to do the same thing.  Going against the grain and inciting real, honest dialogues when others can’t or won’t usually doesn’t hold you back, but helps you progress, especially if you’re in the right environment.

  1. Compassion

When we empathetically hold space for others, we free them from their own fears and worries.  Compassion allows us to create a safe space for others to be themselves, and that’s when people are most able to contribute in a meaningful way.  Our spouses, families, and friends aren’t the only ones who appreciate compassion.  Our employees do, too.  When others feel valued, appreciated and seen, they give us their all.  They do their best work and deliver their best ideas, which is what helps us move forward.

Over the years, numerous employees have thanked me for being so kind and understanding.  They’ve told me how enjoyable it is to come to work when they have a boss or colleague who truly cares about them.  Sadly, compassionate leaders are somewhat rare.  If you’re one of them, you stand out and this breeds a tremendous amount of loyalty and respect.  When people respect you, they’re more willing to push through challenges and find solutions for you, which means you’ll get better results.

  1. Accountability

It’s amazing how much traction you create in life when you keep your word.  The most successful people I know always do the things they said they’d do.  They regularly keep their commitments, including the ones they make to themselves.  Over time, people notice.  This breeds a great deal of trust.  When you take responsibility for both your behaviors and the results, you’ll work harder to find solutions in the toughest of circumstances.  When the buck stops with you, and you don’t blame others for your problems, you save a tremendous amount of time.

Most people spend an inordinate amount of time finding scapegoats and assigning fault to anyone but themselves.  This behavior prevents us from getting better.  People who are truly accountable stay focused on their circle of control, not their circle of concern.  Therein, lies all the difference.  Whether you’re leading others or just leading yourself, accountability is what makes progress possible.

I Power Seeds

Here are our takeaways and thoughts - pause and reflect, then nourish and grow!

We suggest incorporating these five qualities into your life and you’ll see significant positive changes.  The rapid and positive impact on how others perceive and value these adjustments will certainly surprise you.  Please provide feedback as you go through your journey.

Book Clubs Reimagined

by IPowerIdeas March 18, 2024

Book Clubs Reimagined

Yes, they can become reimagined!  Try this approach, you will be surprised.  The first time I used my new approach we went from only a few attending to standing room only.  The latest time I used this method, 23 out of 26 people invited are participating and the feedback has been nothing but positive and enthusiastic energy.

A professional book club is a collaborative and enriching forum for individuals in similar or diverse fields to come together and discuss books relevant to their careers.

This unique platform encourages continuous learning, exposes members to new ideas and perspectives, and promotes networking in a relaxed, supportive environment.  Attendees benefit from the shared wisdom and experiences of their peers, leading to personal and professional growth.  Engaging with a variety of books can spark innovation, enhance problem-solving skills, and foster a culture of knowledge sharing.

By participating in a professional book club, members not only stay updated with the latest trends and insights but also develop a stronger sense of community and belonging.  This experience enriches their professional journey, making it a valuable addition to their ongoing development.

Here is a simple summary sheet to utilize when explaining how the reimagined book club works.

Why Leaders Should Embrace the Joy of Missing Out (FOMO)

by IPowerIdeas February 22, 2024

3 Big Reasons Why Leaders Should Embrace the Joy of Missing Out (FOMO)

If you want to spark creativity, build resilience and strengthen relationships, consider doing “less.”

Key Takeaways

  • Embracing “less” is imperative for leaders who want to have a collaborative, supportive and high-performing team.
  • There is so much satisfaction to be found in focus and intentional choices.

As a high achiever, your to-do list will expand to fill the space you give it.  You can see the value in every opportunity, and the fear of missing out (FOMO) is powerful.  As an ambitious leader, I’m always thinking about how to maximize my time.  You probably are, too.  But are you missing out on life’s quiet moments?  The ones that spark creativity and build resilience?  Embracing the joy of missing out (JOMO) is my unlikely professional development recommendation.  Choosing fulfillment over FOMO gives me space to trust my team and the time to reconnect with my priorities.

I credit one of the leaders on my team with teaching me about JOMO.  Her decision to reframe “fear” into “joy” allows her to maintain a healthy work-life balance and enjoy a more intentional experience of freedom than most people I know.  Spurred on by her example, I decided to log off during a recent vacation. For eight business days, I didn’t check my email. I deleted the email app from my cell.  I was fully present for my trip, and my loved ones and I returned to the office as a JOMO evangelist.

Ultimately, knowing and modeling that “less” can be “more” will make you a better leader. Here’s why.

  1. Focus and creativity flourish with rest

Our attention spans are decreasing. The average person shifts focus on a screen every 47 seconds. Every time the focus shifts, our brains must start from the beginning of the new task. We make more mistakes, and it takes longer to complete a task. Plus, endless hustle can stifle creativity and innovation, which is a concern for 60% of leaders. Our base level of distraction is the real productivity-killer. Combatting it takes effort. Enter JOMO.

Traditional understandings of “maximizing time” might be hurting productivity instead of helping. While collaboration can be a tremendous source of creativity in the workplace, tougher problems require more time for the brain to make connections and form new, big ideas.

Science shows that intentional breaks, even very short ones, help our brains better process all the information we’re juggling at any given time. A mind that’s given the time to wander intentionally is free to solve complex problems.

  1. Disconnecting from the hustle fuels deeper connections with yourself and others

The always-on mentality can drown out the very things that make work meaningful. Focusing too narrowly on the day-to-day work and stressors can leave us feeling disconnected from our inner selves. Intentional disengagement and embracing JOMO gives us the space for introspection and self-awareness. We remember what we care most about and what really motivates us.

The highlights of my career so far aren’t KPIs; they’re relationships. From franchise owners I’ve helped reach new heights to nurturing blossoming leaders on my own team, it’s all about people. That goes for most businesses, too. Performance boils down to trust and authenticity. To show up as your authentic self, you must cultivate self-awareness and interrogate your values: Who are you, really? The opportunity for this kind of thinking doesn’t come up during the average workday. You have to make the choice to pause and reflect. You have to opt to miss out on doing something from your to-do list.

Learning that it’s OK not to be in every meeting is an exercise in trust. When you have strong relationships on your team and across departments, you can rely on their good judgment to pull you in when necessary.

  1. Modeling resilience-boosting habits has a ripple effect on teams

Embracing “less” is imperative for leaders who want to have a collaborative, supportive and high-performing team. Chasing achievement can be exhilarating, but over time, the perception that success demands a 24/7 schedule takes its toll. According to Gallup research, people are more likely to leave a job due to culture or work-life balance problems than for better pay.

Overall, employees are more disengaged than they were just a few years ago, and 1 in 4 employees is experiencing signs of burnout. A good leader can help prevent burnout (and all its costs) by walking the walk with their teams. When leaders normalize setting boundaries, it empowers their team to do the same.

Choose fulfillment over FOMO and reap the rewards

“More” is a defining characteristic of work for high achievers and leaders: more emails, more meetings, more urgent decisions, more ways to connect, more opportunities to make a difference. Honestly, I thrive with all that “more.” That’s why I have to be so intentional about saying “no” to some of the pressure.

By making the conscious decision to miss out sometimes, we create space to remember who we are and what really matters. There is so much satisfaction to be found in focus and intentional choices. Work is not the most important thing we do. The time we spend with the people who love us is what really matters.

I Power Seeds

Here are our takeaways and thoughts - pause and reflect, then nourish and grow!

Can’t we all really relate to this?  We all have FOMO, but I know from personal experience, most of my best thoughts and ideas happened when I was away from the office and work.  I challenge everyone to force yourself to find and schedule time away to pull away from schedules (ironic right) and technology and all the tasks of the day and just let your mind wander and meditate.  You will be shocked and amazed how many creative, innovative, and valuable ideas you will have.  And of course, let us know how it goes.

Qualities of People Who Are Highly Respected

by IPowerIdeas February 19, 2024

The 7 Qualities of People Who Are Highly Respected

Leaders are judged on their results and respected for how well they treat people.

Respect is something not automatically given.

It must be earned.

When you’re in a leadership position, it is imperative that the people with whom you work respect you.  They might respect your work habits, your intelligence, or your ability to close a deal.  Yet, there’s more to respect than that.  If you can earn their respect as a person, then you’ve really won the game.

Here are some tips for earning more respect.

  1. Be polite.

Always be polite to everyone you meet during the day, from your family members to your co-workers, to the checkout person at the grocery store.  Give others the same respect you’d like to receive yourself.  Seek out actions you can take to offer politeness.  Open the door at the coffee shop for the person behind you, or let the person with one item go ahead of you in the grocery store.  Say please and thank you whenever possible.

  1. Act respectfully.

Eliminate disrespectful behaviors such as rolling your eyes, interrupting or talking negatively about someone.  Not only are these actions not respectful of the person you’re interacting with, they deter or prevent further involvement or resolution of issues, and create a wedge that can become permanent. Instead, foster an environment of respectful listening.  Everyone deserves to be heard, even if you don’t agree with a person’s views or opinions.  Consider how you’d like to be treated if you have something to say, especially if there is an important issue at hand.

  1. Listen well.

Listening is an active process, not a passive one.  Think before you speak.  Most often in today’s conversations, one person’s comments “trigger” thoughts in the listener, who then brings forth their own story along the same lines. Instead of telling your tale, ask questions that encourage the speaker to tell you more.  Most people will be flattered that you care.

  1. Be helpful.

People earn respect by always being ready to lend a hand or an ear whenever they’re needed or notice an opportunity to help.  Look for opportunities to help that you might have previously overlooked.  Does a co-worker need help with a big project?  Can you grab a cup of coffee for someone?  Strive to be helpful several times a day.

  1. Don’t make excuses.

Your actions are based on your choices, and barring some unforeseen circumstance, there is no reason for excuses.  Own your actions.  For example, if you’re constantly late, don’t make lame excuses.  Own up to your mistakes and instead of dwelling on them, look for opportunities to move past them and do better next time.  Instead of focusing on your shortcomings, ask, “How can I rectify my behavior or situation?”

  1. Let go of anger.

Holding on to anger or a grudge doesn’t hurt anyone but yourself.  If you get upset, allow yourself to be angry momentarily, then move on and either rectify the situation or put it behind you.  Give yourself and others a break. Forgive, and then forget.

  1. Be willing to change.

Being intractable won’t get you anywhere.  Realize that the process of evolution includes change.  Make an effort to grow as a person; learn new skills, try new activities, and especially, re-examine your automatic behaviors.  And don’t forget to congratulate yourself on progress you make along the way to becoming a better person.

I Power Seeds

Here are our takeaways and thoughts - pause and reflect, then nourish and grow!

Respect is not inherent; it must be actively earned, especially in leadership roles where it’s crucial for leaders to gain respect not only for their professional abilities but also as individuals.  Key strategies to earn respect include being polite to everyone, acting respectfully by eliminating negative behaviors, and being a good listener, which encourages further communication and respect.  Additional tips involve being helpful, taking responsibility for your actions without making excuses, letting go of anger, and being open to change and personal growth.

Find A Leadership Mentor

by IPowerIdeas February 19, 2024

5 Easy Ways To Find A Leadership Mentor In 2024

If you look at the lives and careers of some of the world’s most successful people in business, you may observe that they share something in common: they had the support of mentors.

Take Oprah Winfrey, for example. Her mentor was the acclaimed poet and author Maya Angelou. Or look at Mark Zuckerberg, who had Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as his mentor.

Both of the above furnished examples showcase high-achieving professionals and leaders within their industries, who started out their multi-billion careers as novices (comparatively), but became wildly successful while under the guidance and support of a mentor.

What Are The Benefits Of Getting A Leadership Mentor?

Utilizing the support of a mentor, especially within your workplace, can have numerous benefits.

First, your leadership mentor can introduce you to their network, which is essential for spotting and securing new business or career boosting opportunities as an aspiring leader.

Because they are able to at least briefly observe you in action within the context of your work environment, your chosen mentor can better identify your areas of improvement and work with you to strengthen your skills and improve strengths. Their context-specific advice and support can also prove to be a strong motivating factor when facing difficulties or setbacks at work.

Finally, they help you achieve your leadership goals through being your accountability partner. Your meetings with them can be seamlessly integrated into your mutual work schedules if you have selected them from within your organization. They don’t even need to be formal. Sometimes these meetings could be quick catch-ups for a coffee break or in the staff canteen. What might be a timely 5-minute check-in via a Teams call, could prove helpful in boosting your confidence before making a critical decision.

How Do I Find A Mentor?

No doubt, you’re reading this article because you already are aware of at least some of the benefits of having a leadership mentor. But what if you don’t currently have one? How can you identify the best leadership mentor for your career aspirations and current professional needs, so you can progress to the next level and have a trusted ear and wise advice to count on?

There are several places you can go, online, and in-person, to find a suitable leadership mentor. These can include:

  • LinkedIn groups and network referrals
  • In-person conferences and networking events
  • In-house mentoring programs offered by your current employer
  • Your university’s alumni network
  • Professional membership associations

What To Look For In A Leadership Mentor

Locations aside, there are three essential criteria that you need to ensure are ticked off your checklist when evaluating and selecting whether your mentor relationship will be a good fit:

Colleagues discussing project at workplace.

  1. Rapport

Do you feel comfortable with your proposed mentor? Will it be a healthy and understanding working relationship? Are you both easily able to strike up conversation and do you feel comfortable confiding in them? This is an essential first step as you won’t experience the full benefits of your mentoring relationship if you don’t feel relaxed enough to be transparent so you can obtain the help you need.

  1. Expertise

Your chosen mentor should have relevant and extensive experience within your industry ideally, and as a leader. This is because they will be able to relate stories from their own experience of their ups and downs, and lessons they’ve learned. This can prove useful for you so you won’t need to repeat the same mistakes they made when they started out in their leadership career.

This is one reason why selecting a mentor from within your company is a bonus, because they likely would have worked there for many years, so they know the ropes—not only of the industry and market—but specifically of your organization.

  1. Communication

Communication skills are the essence of successful relationships, and especially is this vital in the case of a mentor/mentee. You should be confident and satisfied that your mentor is able to communicate with you clearly and with empathy, and that they are able to deliver constructive criticism.

They should not be so “nice” that they are afraid of telling you the truth and tend to sugar-coat their advice, but you want to ensure that they always have your best interest at heart, and that they frame their feedback in a way that enables you to grow.

Once you have identified these characteristics in your chosen mentor, reach out to them and ask for their support. You may find in some instances that it is best to obtain the support of a leadership coach, who usually would charge a fee for their sessions with you. In other cases, you might be easily able to identify a successful leader who is willing to lend their time, free of charge, as a mentor.

It’s up to you to weigh up your options and decide what works best, not only for your budget, but for your overall leadership goals.

‘Go Back to Your Tractors’

4 Business Lessons We Can Learn From the Iconic Rise of Lamborghini

Lamborghini’s story is one of humble beginnings, fueled by a lifelong passion for cars and set into motion by a feud with Enzo Ferrari himself.

Key Takeaways

  • By recognizing opportunity and utilizing resources, you can find success.
  • Chase perfection and don’t compromise, ever.

After over 60 years in business, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann says the supercar company is still going strong — selling more cars every month than it can produce, even after increasing production twice in 2022.  Amidst inflation, rising interest rates, and increasing energy costs, it’s a stunning success story — especially for a once-bankrupt company, liquidated and pulled up by the bootstraps of a farmer’s son.

With annual revenue exceeding €2.8 billion ($US3.07 billion), Lamborghini may not seem like a case study for small and medium-sized businesses, but this mega company’s long and tattered history can teach modern founders a thing or two about innovating from raw resources, leveraging publicity, and refusing to compromise on the quality of its products.  Business owners may recognize themselves in the humbleness of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s beginnings, but his whole story offers four key lessons for how to turn core values into an enduring brand.

  1. Get savvy: Start with what you know

Ferruccio Lamborghini was born into an Italian family of farmers, but from a young age, his focus was less on the farm and more on the machines needed to operate it.  He was gifted at fixing engines, a knack that steered him to attend technical school and later to serve as a mechanic in World War II for the Italian armed forces.

After the war ended, Ferruccio saw opportunity.  He salvaged surplus parts the Allied Forces had left behind and returned to his hometown, where he began building tractors on his family’s farm.  The Lamborghini Trattori company was born with its notoriously affordable and robust builds.

In just a few short years, Ferruccio had not one but two flourishing companies (the other a heating and air-conditioning business), making him one of the wealthiest men in Italy by 1962.  His early ventures may not have been as glamorous as the supercar company known the world over today, but they provide a strategic blueprint for business owners.

By recognizing opportunity and utilizing the period’s abundant resources, Ferruccio was able to leverage his farming connections and existing skills to embrace tractor manufacturing.  He then diversified into the heating/air conditioning sector to help mitigate risk as he observed changes in post-war living.  These savvy decisions ultimately set Ferruccio on the path to pursuing his deepest passion.

  1. Chase perfection and don’t compromise, ever

By the time he was in his 40s, Ferruccio had ample time and money and so briefly considered building helicopters, but the government refused him a license.  Instead, he turned to marvel at his growing collection of Jaguars, Mercedes, Ferraris and Maseratis.  But Ferruccio’s enthusiasm for perfection led to a nagging problem: No car ever completely satisfied him.

If it wasn’t the weak ventilation, it was the noise of the power transmission or the inferior leather lining.  When he purchased a brand-new Ferrari 250 GT, he experienced issues with its clutch.  Frustrated, Ferruccio told his factory mechanics to take the assembly apart, revealing that his top-of-the-line Ferrari used the same clutch component as Lamborghini’s own tractors.

Ferruccio was shocked.  He paid 10 lire for his tractor clutches; Ferrari charged him 1,000 for the same part.  He was even more upset to learn that Ferraris were not built with specialty components that were more durable and suitable for the use case.  He took his complaint straight to Enzo Ferrari himself but was not met with open arms.  Ferruccio went to his grave claiming that Ferrari, known for his bluntness, yelled at him: “The problem is not my car, it’s the driver.  Go back to your tractors and leave me alone!”

Whether fudged or fabricated, the two titans’ decades-long feud provided fantastic publicity for both parties.  Ferrari was already a household name, and by hiring some of Ferrari’s ex-engineers and -mechanics, Lamborghini was able to debut its first model car only four months later.

  1. Elevate customer service

Lamborghini presented its first prototype at the 1963 Turin Auto Show, dubbing it the Lamborghini 350 GTV.  Ferruccio chose his zodiac sign, Taurus the Bull, as the company logo.  The prototype morphed into Lamborghini’s first production model and later the Miura, Espada, Islero and Jarama.  The company boomed as Lamborghini’s cars received wide acclaim for their refinement, power and comfort.

A lifelong passion for cars fueled Ferruccio, but his early business ventures proved priceless in setting the company apart.  His heating and air-conditioning service company, Brucatori, had instilled in him the importance of never compromising on customer satisfaction.  If a customer’s car broke down, Lamborghini would pay to send a mechanic straight to them, by plane if needed, along with a personal letter of apology.  This no-compromise mentality became indelibly associated with the luxury level of not just the car itself but the Lamborghini service.

  1. Core values are meant to last

Unfortunately, the 1970s weren’t as kind to the brand.  Union strife and failed emissions tests stifled the company’s entry into the lucrative U.S. market, leading to a temporary withdrawal.  While facing challenges with conforming to U.S. regulations, Lamborghini only managed to continue selling the Countach in America after a seven-year absence.

Feeling the weight of financial troubles, Ferruccio sold his shares and retired, and Lamborghini eventually entered bankruptcy proceedings.  The company changed hands multiple times throughout the ’80s, and the product line stagnated.  But we all know the story didn’t end there.  The Volkswagen Group acquired Lamborghini in 1998 and, under new owners, innovation returned.

Under the management of Volkswagen’s Audi division, Lamborghini has regained its status as a supercar manufacturer known for its incredible performance, state-of-the-art power and unparalleled luxury.  Ferruccio may have moved on long ago, but he created a legacy through his unwavering commitment to service, performance, and perfection.  It’s a lesson of perseverance and staying true to a brand’s core values. And when it was time for Ferruccio to step down, brand evangelists kept the name and the tenacity behind Lamborghini alive for future generations.

This is an incredible story of a drive and passion to be and provide the best.  His relentless drive to make the best cars along with his exceptional customer service made the car company the incredible success story it is today.  This is an inspirational story about uncompromising leadership.

Your Leadership Coach

How to Optimize Time With Your Leadership Coach

Successful leaders can benefit from a small group of confidantes who can impart wisdom and help evaluate situations from an objective perspective.  Investing in a leadership coach can help supplement this crucial circle of advisees.

Leadership coaches are often hired to work with individuals or teams to help polish rough edges, support transitions into new roles or provide insight as a thinking partner with no hidden agenda.  They can provide knowledge and wisdom, helping businesspeople think situations through from an unbiased perspective. K nowing how to optimize your sessions with a coach can maximize the benefit for your professional success, as well as that of your company.

Before the first session, brainstorm a bit about the specific reasons you would like to work with a coach and what goals you might want to work toward.  Goal-setting will be a major part of your first session.  The key questions you will discuss may be  What are your goals?  What drives them?  What goals do others have for you?  Where does each goal fall in a priority ranking?  No need to come to the first session with all the answers, as your coach will be able to guide you through this process.  However, coming to the session with these questions in mind will help get the ball rolling so your coach can then help you define specific goals.

These goals should be specific, realistic and within a defined period.  For example, my client John came to me a few years ago, and in his first session, he told me his main goal was to connect better with his Millennial staff. “For some reason, I just do not understand that generation,” he commented.  I was impressed by his emotional intelligence in acknowledging his challenges and eagerness to truly connect with his team.  His open-mindedness was going to be a great advantage.  After walking through his reasoning behind this major umbrella goal, we decided to lay out defined and specific goals to help gauge his progress.  The first one was to write down several instances of misunderstanding or missed connections with his reports in the past.  Based on those anecdotes, we would be able to discover a pattern or potentially identify missed opportunities for communication.

Another definitive goal was to set up informal coffee chats with several of his Millennial staff to see if he could connect with them on a personal level and see if there were any similarities or differences in his ability to connect with them professionally.

This initial goal-setting conversation is meaty and can take a session or two.  Once the goals are clearly established, you will walk through what success and progress looks like.  Since most clients choose long-term goals, recognizing markers of progress and celebrating them can help keep leaders motivated and proud of their victories, no matter how small.

Once your goals are clearly defined, make a time commitment to meet with your coach on a regular basis, such as every other week.  During these regular sessions, your coach will check in about your overhead goals and help you stay on track.  I recommend taking five to ten minutes before each session to review these goals to have them top-of-mind during your conversation.  Many clients choose to use a visual reminder, such as a simple Word document or—for the artistically inclined—a color-coordinated diagram.

Chat with your coach about specific situations in your work that present a challenge.  Based on these anecdotes, your coach can help you recognize the markers of progress that you have already established or help you identify a pattern in your communication or leadership style that may be either detrimental or beneficial for your goals.  By talking through situations in which you navigate obstacles or feel pride or challenged, your coach can guide you in examining tools and models that best work for you.  Coaches can use specific stories to help their clients build an impressive toolkit for similar situations in the future.

A close group of confidantes can support leaders in their professional careers as they navigate challenging situations.  However, it is important that these people are not “yes” people who agree blindly with everything.  True advisors listen and support and can offer perspective when needed.  Knowing how to optimize time with a leadership coach optimizes your investment.  Set goals and keep them top-of-mind.  Measure progress and celebrate your success, no matter how small.  Commit to your regular appointments.  Be honest and just show up.  Most coaches do not expect you to come with homework to your sessions, but they do expect you to be present and open, because that is the only way they can truly support you and be the wise advisor they have trained to be.

Here are our takeaways and thoughts - pause and reflect, then nourish and grow!

Having a group of trusted advisors is crucial for leaders to navigate professional challenges, providing support and diverse perspectives rather than just agreement.  Maximizing the benefits from a leadership coach involves setting clear goals, measuring progress, and being committed and honest in-person sessions.  Success in leadership development hinges on being present and open during coaching, allowing coaches to offer the targeted guidance and support they are trained to provide.

Cultivating Leaders Within

by IPowerIdeas February 13, 2024

Cultivating Leaders Within

The Key To Business Adaptation

As a company expands, launching various business sectors or establishing branches in different regions, it starts encountering difficulties in cultivating more leaders.  This issue has been around for as long as modern corporations have existed.

Is Leadership In Our Genes?

The question of whether leaders are born or made always sparks debates. Let’s first define what set of traits we call leadership.  Warren Bennis, the author of On Becoming a Leader, highlights several characteristics common to leaders: “a guiding vision, passion that provides hope and inspires others, integrity (which encompasses candor, maturity and self-knowledge), curiosity, and the willingness to take risks.”

Let’s see whether these traits are innate or acquired throughout life.  Fortunately, there are numerous studies on this topic to lean on.

In studies conducted over the past decade that are still widely cited today, scientists have relied heavily on the statistical analysis of differences between pairs of twins to estimate the degree to which “leadership” correlates with genetic factors or life circumstances.  The results show that the genetic component of taking on a leadership role is 30%, whereas the environmental influence is estimated at 70%.  Other research in molecular genetics again involving twins estimated “the heritability of leadership role occupancy at only 24%.”

So, in general, leadership isn’t what we’re born with.  Leaders—and especially outstanding leaders—grow over time through hard work and life experience.

However, depending on the leadership qualities and effort applied, one can get a leader of different scales: a soccer team captain, a company manager or a country president.  If we look at this through the lens of business goals, the task of the company is to recognize leadership traits in team members and create conditions under which this set of qualities unfolds naturally.

Create a Space for Rational Risk

My recipe: Create an environment within the company in which employees who have only recently taken on a leadership position or are striving for it have the opportunity to make mistakes.  To facilitate this, establish clear KPIs that measure intermediate stages of project implementation, allowing leaders to learn from errors and adjust their approach accordingly.  Regular meetings should be held to review these KPIs, discuss progress and address any challenges.  This will allow you to quickly halt a project if necessary to avoid significant losses.  In such a system, team members can propose new approaches and strive for different results so the business doesn’t suffer.

Here are a few practical steps to support the development of leaders from within.

  • Create an atmosphere in which initiatives and new ideas are welcomed and encouraged. This motivates employees to be more active and propose fresh projects.

  • Cultivate leaders within the company by implementing a robust mentorship program that pairs less experienced employees with seasoned leaders to foster skill development.

  • Provide regular opportunities for advancement and professional growth, such as workshops, seminars and projects that challenge and expand teammates’ current skill sets.

  • Hire from your “alumni.” Invite former employees who have gained new experience in other companies to return to your team in new positions, enriching your corporate culture with fresh views and approaches.

Hire From Outside Or Grow Within?

This choice hinges on the company’s growth rate and current business tasks.  Growing a leader from within may be preferable because they’ve already proven themselves.  Sometimes, there’s an opportunity to invest in the future, preparing an employee to become a leader gradually, but other times, it’s necessary to solve a current problem quickly. In the latter case, companies might need to hire a manager from outside.

However, hiring a new person has its risks.  For instance, they may not fit into the corporate culture.  I believe being a successful leader is a combination of being in the right place at the right time and having the knowledge and experience needed.  Sometimes, all the pieces of the puzzle match, but other times, you have to say goodbye to the manager after one or two reporting periods.

Balancing Leaders And Integrators

Tracking the number of leaders “grown” within the company can be useful for understanding trends and statistics, but it isn’t an end in itself.  The balance between leaders and integrators in the team is important.  Leaders are visionaries—they set the direction of movement and coordinate.  However, if the number of leaders is too high, there’s a risk of creating a “company of visionaries,” which can lead to inconsistency of actions.

Should We Always Keep Leaders In The Team?

Now, the question of the economic feasibility of investing in growing leaders within the company becomes relevant. A n aphorism comes to mind: If you invest in people, you may risk losing them, but if you don’t invest in the team, you may lose the business.

I Power Seeds

Here are our takeaways and thoughts - pause and reflect, then nourish and grow!

Remembering that employees will eventually move on if they surpass the challenges of their current roles is crucial.  This turnover is a natural aspect of business and can have a positive impact on the company and its workforce.  Maintaining a healthy level of staff turnover is indicative of a company’s growth and evolution.  Consequently, nurturing leadership within the organization is more than a mere task; it’s a strategic approach that propels us towards progress and development.

Farmers Restore Ancient Groves

by IPowerIdeas February 13, 2024

Farmers on Small Italian Islands Restore Ancient Groves and Local Production

Growers on Giglio Island and Capri are restoring centuries-old olive trees to revive a fading culture and protect unique island landscapes.

Italy’s small Mediterranean islands are treasure troves of natural and cultural wonders.  Some, now known as popular holiday destinations, were once settled by peasants who practiced subsistence agriculture.  Until the second half of the 20th century, it was common to find expanses of cultivated olive groves and active olive presses on most inhabited islets.

“I had been thinking for some years of running a farm with my family, but there was a bit of indecision because we already had another job,” he added.

“Eventually, I found great support in my wife Stefania Pellegrini and my cousin Emanuele Bancalà, and with them, I started to restore our almost 300 olive trees.”

Fewer than 1,500 people live year-round on the island, characterized by hilly terrain, steep terraces that slope toward smooth, pale granite cliffs, and a few sandy beaches much sought-after by vacationers during the warmest months.

“An olive mill has been operating on the island until the mid-1990s,” Bancalà said.  “Our ancestors landed on these coasts between 1560 and 1570, and afterward, they were most likely engaged in olive farming.”

“Indeed, today, we are taking care of trees that have been passed down to us from our great-grandfather, who produced olive oil,” he added.  “The company’s name is a tribute to him; Goffo is the nickname by which he was known in the village.”

“After having recovered our plots, we started asking fellow villagers if we could manage their lands through a rental agreement,” Bancalà said.  “Our work has been highly appreciated, and several owners of olive groves ended up asking us to take care of their trees.”

“Today, this has become an important project for us since most olive trees are centuries old and represent a true heritage,” he added.  “At the same time, we preserve the terraces and manage the land sustainably, using only organic fertilizers.”

Usually, the team carries out a drastic reform pruning of the trees to restore their vegetative-productive balance after years of neglect.  They take two or three years to become productive again.

“We have cleaned up some plots where the olive trees could not even be seen since they were submerged by vegetation,” Bancalà said.  “Moreover, some trees can grow eight meters tall.  We prune them all according to the polyconic vase system and make them lower, up to a maximum of three meters.  Those reformed a couple of years ago are starting to bear fruit again.”

The team now manages 750 trees and has planned field visits to evaluate the conditions of four new plots to take over in the coming weeks.

“The operations are not easy due to the steep slopes and irregularity of the terrain,” Bancalà said.  “It is impossible to use vehicles, and the harvest is done by hand.  Since some trees are even ten minutes walking distance from the main road where we park the van, carrying the bins full of olives can be quite strenuous.”

“Despite the difficulties, including the weather issues of the last few years, we maintained high-quality standards and achieved great results that repay all the efforts.  Added to this is the awareness of the landscape and environmental value of our work,” Bancalà said.

“One day, while walking in the restored plots at the end of the work and commenting on the great results of the restoration, we came up with the idea of recovering all the abandoned lands of the area and the olive trees growing on them,” Lelj said.

“So far, we have succeeded in recovering about 30 hectares of groves, and we usually manage to restore one or two hectares every year,” Lelj said, specifying that they not only clean up the land, prune the trees and maintain the terraces but also plant new olive trees.

“We added approximately 700 trees to replenish the sparser orchards,” he said.

8 Leadership Strategies for Maintaining Morale

by IPowerIdeas February 13, 2024

8 Leadership Strategies for Maintaining Morale in Tough Times

Rebuilding team motivation after business setbacks is a major leadership challenge

Most successful business leaders will tell you that their primary motivation is to “change the world” and to build something lasting, not to make a lot of money, while the conventional wisdom is that employees work for money, above all else.

From Leadership Lessons of the White House Fellows by Charles P. Garcia, summarizes that employees value having strong leaders, who incentivize them to do their best, just as much if not more than money does.

For action, he provides a list of principles for business owners and managers alike, derived from his first-hand discussions with some of the nation’s greatest leaders.

  1. Energize your team.

Instead of being the type of leader who sucks the energy away from others, resolve to be the kind of leader who strives to bring passion and positive energy to the workplace every day.  Your employees have just helped you pull your company through one of the nation’s worst economic periods.  It’s time they had a source of positive energy.

  1. There’s more to life than work.

Great leaders have deep reserves of physical, spiritual, and emotional energy, and that energy is usually fueled by a strong and supportive relationship with the people they love, regular exercise, a healthy lifestyle, and setting aside time for reflection.

  1. Put your people first.

No organization is better than the people who run it.  The fact is that you are in the people business–the business of hiring, training, and managing people to deliver the product or service you provide.  If the people are the engine of your success, to be a great leader you need to attend to your people with a laser-like focus.

  1. Act with integrity.

In a time when news reports are filled with the stories of private and public leaders who’ve acted inappropriately and have gone against the best interests of their employees or constituents, showing your employees that you value integrity can help motivate them and create a sense of pride for your organization.

  1. Be a great communicator.

Leadership is influencing others, and this cannot be achieved without effective communication.  If you’re struggling with communicating with your employees, first work on your ability to influence individuals by choosing impactful words to carry your message.  Then you need to figure out how to communicate to a larger audience.

  1. Be a great listener.

The most effective leaders are the ones who take the time to listen not just to their team members’ words but to the priceless hidden meaning beneath them.  Remember that during good times and bad, sometimes your employees just need someone to talk to.  Communicate to them that you are always waiting with open ears.

  1. Be a problem solver.

Post a sign above your office door that reads, “Don’t Bring Me Problems. Bring Me Solutions.”  Then set about the task of guiding each person on your team toward the goal of becoming a top-notch problem solver during this crucial period.

  1. Lead through experience and competence, not through title or position.

Mentor your employees, encourage them, and make partners out of them, and your organization is sure to benefit.  If you want to survive the tough economy, that’s exactly the kind of leadership motif you need for your organization.

I Power Seeds

Here are our takeaways and thoughts - pause and reflect, then nourish and grow!

The core tenets of effective leadership remain constant regardless of circumstances, whether in times of prosperity or adversity.  However, in times of constraint, adhering to these principles becomes even more crucial as they can make the difference between triumph and defeat.  It is imperative to begin inspiring and rallying your employees by implementing these fundamental principles now.  By doing so, your team will help you through the forthcoming challenges.
